The Ancient Roots of Christianity in India

One of the most distinctive aspects of Indian Christian history is its antiquity. According to longstanding tradition, the Apostle Thomas arrived on the Malabar Coast of southwestern India in the first century CE and established Christian communities that would eventually become known as the Saint Thomas Christians or Nasranis.

Over centuries, these communities developed connections with Christian centers in Persia and the Middle East while simultaneously integrating into the social and cultural fabric of India. Their liturgical traditions, architecture, customs, and language reflect a uniquely Indian expression of Christianity.

Subsequent centuries witnessed the arrival of additional Christian influences through trade, migration, missionary activity, and colonial expansion. Portuguese, French, British, Syrian, Armenian, and other Christian traditions all contributed to the evolving religious landscape of India.

Understanding these historical developments is essential to appreciating the diversity that characterizes Indian Christianity today.
