Introduction
Loreto College, Kolkata, is one of India's oldest and most respected women's colleges. In 1841, a group of Loreto Sisters led by Mother Delphine Hart arrived in Calcutta (now Kolkata) from Ireland to establish the first Loreto mission in India. The mission was undertaken with the encouragement and support of Mother Teresa Ball, who had founded the Irish branch of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Rathfarnham in 1821. Their mission was to establish schools for girls at a time when educational opportunities for women were extremely limited. From this first foundation grew the extensive network of Loreto schools and educational institutions across India, including the later establishment of Loreto College in 1912.
The sisters soon founded what became Loreto House, one of India's pioneering schools for girls. Over the following decades, the Loreto Sisters established schools across Bengal and other parts of India, building a reputation for academic excellence and holistic education.
As increasing numbers of women completed their secondary education, the need for opportunities in higher education became evident. This led to the establishment of Loreto College in 1912.
Establishment of Loreto College
